From 1st June 1997 TPDS(Targetted Public Distribution System)with a strategy to eradicate poverty was introduced under which a special scheme called BPL for the population living Below the Poverty Line was also introduced.

In Nagaland, 95,500 families or households have been identified as BPL families under BPL Scheme of TPDS. These families are provided foodgrains at subsidised rates by the Government. Click here to view the Districtwise number of BPL Beneficiaries.

Initially the number of BPL households in the State was 89,000 which was later raised to 1,24,000 of which poorest of the poor BPL households were identified and placed under AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) and was fully came into operation from 1st October 2001.Click here to view the Districtwise number of AAY Beneficiaries.

From 1st April, 2000 another Poverty Alleviation Scheme named Annapurna meant for destitute, indigent senior citizens aged 65 years & above entitled for old age pension under NOAPS (National Old Age Pension Scheme) but yet to be covered/identified, was intrtoduced/identified and provided 10 Kgs of rice per identified beneficiary per month free of cost.
